Luke 1:26-38
The Annunciation
~The angel Gabriel greets Mary by saying, “Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!”
~Mary is greatly troubled but Gabriel reassures her by saying, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.”
~Gabriel then tells Mary that she will conceive and that the baby will be named Jesus. In a Messianic tribute Gabriel then says, “He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”
~After Mary tries to figure out how a virgin can become pregnant Gabriel lets her know that it is from the Holy Spirit and the power of the Most High that she has become pregnant.
~Mary leaves the encounter willing to do the Lord God’s will…

Mary’s Song
~The Latin translation of the Bible entitled Luke 1:46-55 the Magnificat after the Latin word for “Magnify”.
~In vs. 46 & 47 Mary declares her gratitude for being used by God Almighty.
~In vs. 48 & 49 Mary gives the basis for her rejoicing.
~In vs. 49 & 50 Mary tells us 3 great things about the Lord- he did great things for her, holy is his name, and his mercy is for those who fear him
The entire song is poetry and contains themes that sound very similar to Old Testament poetry.

How about you?
~Think about Mary’s state of mind- she most likely was between 14 & 15 years old at the time of Gabriel’s visit and she’s being told that the very Son of God would be in her womb- how might you react to similar news?
~Would it be with Mary’s attitude of going along with it as long as it was in the Lord God’s will?

What about Joseph?
~Both Matthew and Luke tell us that Mary and Joseph were pledged to be married (Matt 1:18 & Luke 1:27) by saying they were betrothed and according to the customs of the day Mary would have been betrothed to Joseph for a year.
~In the legal sense the two would have been married, but until the year was over and Joseph took her home, sexual relations would have been prohibited.
~Matthew 1:18-25 records Joseph’s side of the story.

Joseph’s Dream
~Joseph decides that since Mary is pregnant that he will quietly divorce her but it is in a dream that Joseph is persuaded not to.
~The prophecy spoken of in the dream comes from Isaiah 7:14 which reads, “Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.” (ESV)
~Question, how long did Mary remain a virgin? The answer is in verse 25, "he took his wife, but knew her not until she had given birth to a son." (Matthew 1:25 ESV) After Jesus was born Mary got to "know" Joseph.
~The verb “to know” in the Bible refers to sex- it goes all the way back to Adam and Eve in the book of Genesis where we first hear of “knowing” a spouse.
