Before we begin-
Let’s pray together…
Intro into the Word
~One of the greatest gifts ever given is the gift of the Word- the Bible. This gift truly is the gift that keeps on giving (move over Jelly of the Month club) because it reveals to us the story of God Almighty and his plans for us.
~Tragically though, fewer people are turning to this perfect gift because they feel intimidated by it- it does require some assembly and it’s instructions are hard to comprehend sometimes.
~Some things to think about:
-How does the Bible fit together anyway?
-Will taking the time to understand its instructions and to fit it together really help you & me?

What does Jesus Christ mean, anyway?
~Jesus, the English rendering of the Hebrew name Yeshua, “He Shall Save”
~Christ, the English word for Christos, “the Anointed One” (Greek) or Mashhiyach, Messiah (Hebrew). This is not really a last name, but instead is a title.

Old Testament Flashback
~Psalm 89 is called a “Messianic Psalm” because it predicts that through David and his offspring, Jesus would come and save the Jews.
~200 years after Psalms was written Isaiah wrote a prophecy about the coming Messiah when he said, “Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.” (Isaiah 9:7 ESV)

Messianic roots
~Matthew is very in tune with Psalm 89 and that Jesus is a descendant of David- four times in the book of Matthew the people are expecting Jesus to be the “son” (or descendant) of David.
~Matthew 9:27 “And as Jesus passed on from there, two blind men followed him, crying aloud, “Have mercy on us, Son of David.”
~Matthew 12:23 “And all the people were amazed, and said, “Can this be the Son of David?”
~Matthew 21:9 “And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!”
~Matthew 22:42 “What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “The son of David.”
