“O God, hear my prayer; give ear to the words of my mouth.”
Psalm 54:2 ESV
Genesis 1:1-5
>What do we learn about the earth from these verses?
>It was formless and void but there was water.
>God was there and so was the Spirit.
>Also in John 1 we learn that Jesus Christ was present in order to complete the Trinity.
>Notice that in 1:5 that days are measured from evening to morning and not from daybreak to sundown- maybe it was God’s intention for everyone to sleep all day and be up all night?

Genesis 1:6-25
>Notice the repetition (God spoke; evening and morning; God saw that it was good). Not only was there repetition but there was a reason behind why the things were created in the order that they were. On day one there was light, day two the sky was separated from the sea, and day three the land separated from the waters. Next day four brought sun, moon, and stars, day five brought birds and sea creatures, and day six brought the land animals (and man).
>Think of days one, two, and three being the empty canvass and days four, five, and six being the paint for the canvass. Day one the canvass that was created was light but notice that the light was not filled until day four with the sun, moon, and stars. Day two’s canvass the sea and sky was not filled until day five; and day three’s canvass the land was not filled until day six with animals and man.

Maybe this chart will put it into perspective:
Day 1: Light (empty) Day 2: Sky and sea (empty) Day 3: Dry land (empty)
Day 4: Sun, moon, and stars (filled) Day 5: Sea creatures and birds (filled) Day 6: Animals and man (filled)

Genesis 1:26-2:25
>After taking the three canvasses (light, sky and sea, and dry land) and then filling them in by speaking, God finishes .
>Notice that after looking at what he creates and calling it good, God looks at everything in total and calls it very good.
>When Chapter 2 starts we are not getting a whole new human creation story, we are getting an elaboration on the creation of man because man is the most important.
>What is really awesome is that every other creature is spoken into existence whereas Adam is made from the very dust of the earth and then has the breath of life breathed into him- only one other that is said to be breathed into by God in the Bible: Scripture.

Suitable Helper
>Out of every creature on earth there was none found that could be a suitable helper for Adam and the Lord noticed that Adam was lonely. Adam is put into a deep sleep and Eve was made from one of Adam’s ribs; this is where we get the word woman (because she was taken out of man).
>Chapter 2 describes two of the most ideal situations that continue on until today: marriage and church. At the end of chapter 2 we are described the first marriage: Adam and Eve together because they are suitable partners, and the guidelines for future marriages- when they do find their suitable partners they are to stay together and become one flesh. Your spouse becomes as attached to you as you are to your own flesh.
>Chapter 2 also tells us about the perfect place where man and woman live together, are perfectly provided for, and can fellowship directly with God.
>The Garden of Eden is actually the first church. This is supposed to be what church is all about- direct fellowship with the Almighty, but the problem is that sin is in our way now. We have to settle for spiritual fellowship and connection in place of direct contact.

Image and Likeness
>Finally, the Lord God says that we are made in his image after his likeness. Mankind is special in the order of creation because we are the culmination of all his work. There are five reasons why we are the crown of creation:
>We were created last but we are not least because only man is given special dominion (responsible use) over every creature in creation.
>We were created in a unique way- we were not spoken into being, man was made from the dust of the earth.
>We were breathed into and have a spirit. The Lord put a lot into man by breathing into him.
>It is only man who is made in God’s image- this means that we have a special harmony with God because we have design and intelligence.
>We are also said to be in God’s likeness which means that we are not carbon copies of the Almighty, but we do share in his essential makeup.
