“Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ. For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me.” (Colossians 1:28-29 ESV)

Grumbled
+Uilnu (Hebrew): to stop (usually over night); by implication, to stay permanently; hence (in a bad sense) to be obstinate (especially in words, to complain).
+We have already read about one instance where the people grumbled against the Lord- after they had left Egypt and the army was coming to get them. We are about to read many more instances of the Hebrews grumbling against the Lord- and they usually come when ever there is a problem that arises.

Water & Food
+So after the crossing point of the Straits of Tiran the Hebrews move into the Shur wilderness and were traveling there for three days.
+ They did not find water (which in their credit can be a very dangerous situation because it meant certain death after six days; especially in the desert).
+What do the people do when they are faced with a difficult situation? THEY WHINE. These are the people that saw the very awesome power of God Almighty displayed in the plagues and instead of relying on him to provide they whine instead.
+They camp for the night at a place named Elim and then they set out. They had been in the wilderness for exactly one month.
+After setting out from Elim after drinking the bitter water the people start doing what they know best- whining.
+“If you had only left us as slaves in Egypt we would at least died full and eating good. No, instead you brought us out here to die of hunger.”
+There have been many attempts to explain what manna is but the truth is that the Hebrews didn’t even know what it was. They called it manna, “what is it?”

Water & Food Continued
+After being given the miracle bread from Heaven that has no equivalent in the natural world, the people are given instructions.
+If only they were as good at listening as they are at whining. Only gather what you are going to eat that day (i.e. don’t gather so much you’ll have leftovers) because if you leave it overnight in your house it will rot.
+On the sixth day they were to gather two portions of food because none was going to fall on the Sabbath day (this is the first occurrence of the word Sabbath in the Bible) none will fall. Again some did not listen.

Water, War, and Law
+Moving along through the wilderness the people arrive at Rephidim which is in modern Saudi Arabia.
+Once again they complain about not having water (this is the second complaint about water) probably because they already complained about starving to death but that was solved with manna.
+Yahweh tells Moses to strike a rock at Horeb and they will be given water to drink. The problem is that I may have given up on this group of people way before this point- Moses certainly had more patience than I do.

Water, War, and Law Continued
+After being taken care by Yahweh at Rephidim the Amalekites came to meet the Hebrews for battle.
+The Amalekites descended from Amalek who was a son of Esau's son Eliphaz.
+During the battle as long as Moses held up his hands the Israelites won so he got some help during the battle when he got tired.
+After the victory Moses builds an altar and names it Yahweh-Nissi, “My Lord is my banner”. ™After the defeat of the Amalekites the people move into the vicinity of Mt. Sinai (which is in modern day Saudi Arabia) and Moses’ father-in-law Jethro comes out to meet them.
+Jethro knows enough to give praise to Yahweh for bringing the Israelites out of Egypt which speaks to the fact that the Lord made himself known to people other than the Israelites.
+Moses apparently was listening and judging everything the people argued about, but Jethro had a more efficient system. This took some stress off of Moses.
