And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment (Philippians 1:9 ESV)
Before we begin
•Before we begin let’s recap some of the memorable people that we have encountered so far:
•Noah- a righteous man in a wicked age who builds a boat because he has faith
•Abraham- A man chosen by God Almighty; not chosen because of his righteousness (which is a great encouragement to anyone today) but chosen by the Lord•Isaac- Son of Abraham (and the son of the Promise) who was almost sacrificed and then had absolutely nothing mentioned about him in the Bible for 60 years until his sons were born
•Esau- Elder son of Isaac who despised his birthright and then lost his blessing
•Jacob- The second son (named “the deceiver”) who did everything in his namesake to get ahead in life and has 11 sons by 4 different women at last count when we left off with him at chapter 33

A summary of chapters 34-36
•In chapter 34 Jacob’s daughter Dinah is raped (the terminology used is “defiled”) and the rapist decides that he wants to marry Dinah afterward because he fell in love with her
•Two of Jacob’s sons Simeon & Levi (the 2nd and 3rd in order) tell the rapist that he can’t marry Dinah because he is not circumcised so the rapist and all of the men in his family decide to go ahead with the circumcision.
•Simeon & Levi wait until the third day after the circumcision (the Bible says “when they were sore”) and attack the entire family and kill them.
•In chapter 35 Rachel gives birth to another son and Jacob names him Benjamin, but she dies during childbirth. We also have the death and burial of Isaac at 180 years old.
•Chapter 36 we are given the genealogy of Esau’s family.

Genesis 37: 1-11
•Sons 5-6: Dan, Naphtali (Bilhah mother) Sons 7-8: Gad, Asher (Zilpah mother)
•Joseph brought in a bad report, which is more than can be said for Lot who lived with the Sodomites even though he knew they were wicked
•Favoritism in this family? How can it be so? Isaac favored Esau although Rebekah favored Jacob and look how that situation panned out…
•The original Hebrew does not say “multi-colored”, it actually says, “long sleeved”, but when used in context a long sleeved tunic was used for distinction and was therefore more colorful than a normal robe or tunic.

Joseph and the family
•Is Joseph a little naïve to be telling his brothers that he had a dream he would be better than them? Perhaps, but Joseph knew that these dreams came from God Almighty.
•His brothers are mad that Joseph is dreaming about becoming the ruler of the family, but if they only knew that there were bigger plans in store for Joseph…
•Joseph’s second dream makes it so that not only all the brothers are bowing down but so are the parents too and even though the brothers are jealous and Jacob rebukes him, Jacob still keeps that dream in his mind.

Genesis 37:12-36
•All of the brothers are out pasturing the flock when Jacob sends Joseph out to check on them
•The brothers conspire to murder Joseph but Reuben (the eldest) talks them into throwing him in a pit (because he planned on rescuing Joseph later)
•We don’t know where Reuben goes but he is not present when Judah (son #4) convinces the rest that they should sell Joseph to Ishmaelite traders.
•When Reuben comes back he is afraid that since he’s the oldest he’ll be in trouble for not bringing Joseph back home. They use goat blood (Jacob used goat skins) to fool their father.
