“Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.” (Psalm 42:11 ESV)

Consecrate
To make or set apart as sacred; to prepare to go into the presence of God.
Normally there is some sort of ritual cleansing that sets someone apart as consecrated.
It is not the washing or cleansing that actually sets the person apart- the consecration ceremony is to remind the individual of how clean their heart is supposed to be when they enter God’s presence.

Exodus 19:1-25
Mount Sinai
Back in Genesis the Lord made a covenant with Noah in the form of a rainbow. This covenant promised no more complete destruction from a flood.
Also in Genesis there was a covenant made with Abraham that made Abraham the father of the Israelites- the chosen people.
After demonstrating his infinite power in the plagues Yahweh carries the people out of Egypt- we are given a beautiful picture of the people being flown out on eagle’s wings.
If you shall keep my covenant you will be my treasured people- this sounds like a simple enough clause.
When Yahweh says that the Israelites were to be a kingdom of priests it is because they will be the channels of his grace to the rest of the people on earth.
Remember that the consecration we are talking about is the outward way of saying how clean their hearts were to be.
The people don’t even touch the mountain because it is going to become holy with God’s presence.

The Ten Commandments—Let’s share a laugh, shall we?
—The Ten Commandments are the opening of the Book of the Covenant, a book of God’s laws to be read to the people. The Ten Commandments are given separately from the rest of the Book of the Covenant in order to distinguish them.
—Notice that when the people go on the mountain they hear and see thunder and lightning, hear the trumpets, and feel the mountain trembling. When Yahweh shows up he does so with wonders of nature so that people can visualize the power of his presence.

The Ten Commandments Continued
The commandments themselves are straightforward as Yahweh introduces himself as the great king of Israel who brought them out of Egyptian slavery.
Commandment I- The Hebrew word translated “before” actually means “hostile to” which indicates that putting another god above the one, true God makes them hostile to our God.
Commandment II- Since Yahweh has no visible form making a representation of him would be sinful.
Commandment III- You can either take his name in vain by either swearing by it, “I swear to God I will…” or using it in a false manner.
Commandment IV- Keeping the Sabbath with the intention of following the day of rest God took after creation.
