Genesis- not just an 80’s band
}Genesis- from the Greek word for “birth”- is indeed the book of beginnings. In it we find the account of how the earth is made, we learn about the first people, and learn about how bad things start to get before the Lord scraps the entire project and starts all over again with eight people (Noah and his family).
Two types of history
}In Genesis we read about the first wedding, the first sin, the first brothers and the first murder. Chapters 1-11 focus on times past and world history in general (Creation of the world, being kicked out of Paradise, sin multiplying to wickedness, universal flood, the table of nations, and the Tower of Babel) but we move into selective history in chapter 12 when we meet Abraham, the father of the chosen people, Israel.
Do you come in with baggage?
}There are some presuppositions that might cloud your understanding of the book of Genesis
- let’s ask a few questions that need to be explored:
}Do you believe that we have an intelligent Creator who created the world or do you believe that it was all a lucky coincidence? <We do have an intelligent Creator>
}Do you believe that the Lord is all powerful and that he has a Sovereign plan? <Yes he is all powerful and has a Sovereign plan>
}Do you believe the Bible is an accurate history book? <yes>
}How old is the earth? <a lot younger that you've been taught in school; think thousands of years old, not billions>
