And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after saying, “This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws on their hearts, and write them on their minds,” then he adds, “I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.”

Numbers 26 Overview
2nd Census
#Back in Chapter one Numbers lived up to its name by conducting a census- now here in chapter 26 we find that after several plagues and rebellions, and after 40 years of wandering in the desert it is nearing the time to enter the Promised Land.
#The two operating the census this time are Moses and Eleazar (due to his father Aaron’s death). Here are the “numbers”:
# Reuben 43,730 (down from 46,500); Simeon 22,200 (down from 59,300); Gad 40,500 (down from 45,650)
#Judah 76,500 (up from 74,600); Issachar 64,300 (up from 54,400); Zebulun 60,500 (up from 57,400)
#Manasseh 52,700 (up from 32,200); Ephraim 32,500 (down from 40,500) Benjamin 45,600 (up from 35,400)

2nd Census Continued
#Dan 64,400 (up from 62,700); Asher 53,400 (up from 41,500); Naphtali 45,400 (down from 53,400)
#Reuben’s slight deduction came from their role in the Korah rebellion.
#After the Census the Lord commanded Moses to give each tribe an inheritance based on tribal size while placement in the land was decided by drawing lots.
#The Levites would not receive an inheritance because they were charged with taking care of the Tabernacle.

Numbers 27
Daughters with no inheritance
#Although chapter 27 is short it presents us with two short stories that appear to have nothing to do with each other.
#The first is about five sisters that had a father who died in the wilderness and they are worried about receiving no inheritance from this.
#They approach Moses and the Elders and present their case- they state the fact that because their father was one of the unbelievers who died in the wilderness they appropriately acknowledge his sin.
#The final decision is that they will gain an inheritance.
Moses Prays
#Moses then goes on a mountain and is reminded that he will not enter the land because of his striking the rock.
#Moses then prays for his predecessor- what tough sandals to fill though, Moses talked face to face with God Almighty.
#The text even says that Joshua only gets some of Moses authority.
#What does this have to do with the five sisters who had no father and no inheritance?
#An exception is made in the inheritance laws for the sisters but none can be made for Moses whose sin was not upholding the Lord as holy.

Numbers 31
<=== USS Vengeance
#Chapters 28 & 29 talked about offerings- daily, monthly, Sabbath, and the festivals.
#Chapter 30 spoke about the regulations of men and women in regards to vow making.
#In Chapter 31 the Lord declares war against Midian and it is a war of vengeance (hence the picture).
#This is Moses’ last great act before death (being gathered unto his people).
#1,000 warriors from each tribe meant that the burden had to be shared equally regardless of tribal size. Phinehas, the priest who stopped the plague with the spear, also follows the battle (but no spear this time).
#It is no coincidence that Balaam son of Beor is listed amongst the dead of Midian. Balaam was not allowed to curse Israel and even talked about how he wanted to live and die like them but in the end Balaam gave Midian the idea of seducing lsrael.
#Although initially Israel had no interest in invading or messing with Midian at all, the Midianites brought upon their own demise.

Vengeance Continued
#All of the men of Midian are killed.
#Women that participated in the sexual rituals were put to death.
#The young boys (who would have messed up the inheritance of the Israelites) were put to death. Virgin girls could live.
