“This day shall be for you a memorial day, and you shall keep it as a feast to the Lord; throughout your generations, as a statute forever, you shall keep it as a feast.” (Exodus 12:14 ESV)
φοβεο
•Phobeo (Greek)-to frighten, to be alarmed; by analogy, to be in awe of (i.e. revere)
•Be afraid, fear (exceedingly), reverence
•Comes from the word φοβος (phobos) where we get our word “phobia”

<=== (Jabbok River)
•Jacob arrived in Haran a poor man with nothing, he stayed for 20 years, and now he is leaving for his homeland.
•Before he crosses over into the Promised Land with his family he arrives at a place where he is protected by angels and stays there the night.
•He names the place “Mahanaim” or “Two Camps”. One of the camps was his families and the other camp was the Lord’s.
•Notice how much he had with him after staying 20 years with Laban and now he is ready to share it with his brother in hopes they can have peace.

Jacob in Fear
•Jacob immediately becomes fearful when he hears that his brother has a 400 man army because Jacob is clearly a runner, not a fighter.
•Jacob ran from Esau after he stole the birthright and the blessing, and then Jacob ran from Laban to come home. It is not in this guy’s blood to fight back.
•He divides his group in half thinking that if one group got attacked then at least the other group could get away unharmed and live another day because part of Esau’s “blessing” from Isaac was that Esau would live and die by the sword.

Genesis 32:22-32
•In the ancient Hebrew there would have been some wordplay here in verse 22 because Jacob (Yahkob) would have crossed the Jabbok (Yahbok).
•Verse 24 we see that Jacob is all alone again like that night in Bethel where he had the dream of the “ladder” but this time he is not dreaming, he is wrestling.
•All through the night and into day light there is no clear winner until Jacob’s hip is broken. When Yahweh wants to leave Jacob refuses to let him go until he gets blessed.
•This blessing he’s had to struggle for (I mean, seriously he’s wrestling with God Almighty to get it, which is not something I recommend) whereas the first blessing he stole.•Just as Abram and Sarai received name changes, now Jacob’s name is changed to Israel.
•The name is of uncertain origin but it breaks down to this: “Isra”- struggles with/ “El”- God. This goes right along with Jacob- Deceiver.
•When Jacob asks the Almighty what his name is he receives this answer, “Why is it that you ask my name?” which reminds us of just how unworthy we are to come into his presence.
•The reason for the all night wrestling- to prepare Jacob to meet Esau and give him confidence. Jacob’s hip is broken because he needed a reminder that you shouldn’t fight with the Lord.

Target Verse
•Tedy nazwał Jakób imię miejsca onego Fanuel, mówiąc: Iżem widział Boga twarzą w twarz, a zachowana jest dusza moja. (Rodzaju 32:30)
•So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel, saying, “For I have seen God face to face, and yet my life has been delivered.” (Genesis 32:30 ESV)

<=== (Jacob's Well at Shechem)
•When Esau is coming Jacob arranges his wives and children in the order that he cares for them: the servants with their kids first, then Leah and her kids next, and finally his favorite spouse Rachel and her only son Joseph.
•Then Jacob tries to give his brother all of the gifts that he had planned and in the original Hebrew the word for “presents” is the same word for “blessing” that had been used of the blessing that Jacob stole from Esau. Jacob repaid the “blessing” with his “blessings”.
•Finally, when Esau offers to lead the way, Jacob lets him go much farther than he intended to go and settles his family in Shechem. Deceived again!
