“Look down from heaven and see, from your holy and beautiful habitation. Where are your zeal and your might? The stirring of your inner parts and your compassion are held back from me.” (Isaiah 63:15 ESV)

Tackling 2 myths
•Myth # 1: One of the most popularly (mis)quoted verses of the Bible: Moses said to Pharaoh, “Let my people go!”
•Myth # 2: This one is perpetuated by a Disney movie (Prince of Egypt, 1998) and the myth is that Ramses was actually the Pharaoh of Egypt during the Exodus and that Moses marched into Pharaoh’s court and stated, “Ramses, let my people go!”

Tackling 2 myths cont.
•The advocates of Ramses being the Pharaoh during the Exodus point to Exodus 1:11 when it says, “They built for Pharaoh store cities, Pithom and Raamses.”
•That’s great but it does not prove anything. Ra was an Egyptian god and it is the basis of the name Ramses so Ramses did not necessarily have to be the Pharaoh at the time to have a city named Raamses.
•Also the name Raamses predated Moses as well because when Jacob came to Egypt in Genesis, “Then Joseph settled his father and his brothers and gave them a possession in the land of Egypt, in the best of the land, in the land of Rameses, as Pharaoh had commanded.” (GENESIS 47:11 ESV)
•Wouldn’t it make more sense to date Moses around the time that we have the Exodus dated because his name is taken from that of Pharaohs Thutmose I and Thutmose II?
•Also Hatshepsut, the queen when Moses is living in Midian, is the princess that would have adopted Moses as a son before her own son (Thutmose III) is born. This comes into play in the 10th plague.

Exodus 5:1-6:13
•So it is right here in verse 1 that we get that answer that debunks the first myth: “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘Let my people go, that they may hold a feast to me in the wilderness.’”
•It wasn’t Moses that claimed the Israelites were his people, it is actually Moses quoting the Lord calling them his people.
•The Pharaoh is not happy with the idea that his slaves leave and instead makes it tougher for them when he gives the order to make bricks without straw.

Evidence
•So the 2nd question remains: is Ramses the Pharaoh that is over Egypt like Disney claims?
•More than likely: no. Ramses I was the Pharaoh over Egypt around 1295 BC and the Exodus happened around 1450 BC a difference of 155 years.
•Most likely the name of the Pharaoh right before the Exodus is Thutmose III who enjoyed a really long reign (1479 BC-1425 BC) We can see in a tomb of a contemporary of Thutmose III the making bricks without straw is actually recorded (this is the only known recording of foreigners making mud bricks):

Exodus 7:1-13
•Moses and Aaron go in to talk to Pharaoh and when Aaron throws down his staff and it turns into a serpent the Egyptians are able to perform that same trick.
•This does not mean that we should go out and try to throw a staff down to turn it into a serpent- that would be performing black magic.
•Notice that Aaron’s serpent ate all the Egyptian serpents- even when magic is used against Yahweh it isn’t even close to being powerful enough to overtake him.
