“Incline your ear, O Lord, and answer me, for I am poor and needy.” (Psalm 86:1 ESV)
Genesis 25:7-11
—Remember back a few lessons when we talked about Noah and the promise that was made to him about man’s days being limited to 120 years? It didn’t happen right away, but with Abraham and Isaac we start seeing the expiration date go down.
—With Abraham notice that he is called an old man at 175 years- contrast that with Methuselah who was 969 years old and Methuselah’s father Enoch who was 365 years old and was considered young.
—Isaac and Ishmael make it to Abraham’s funeral and Abraham is buried in the cave at Machpelah with Sarah.

Genesis 25:19-26:5
—We don’t know how old Rebekah is when Isaac takes her as a bride but more than likely she is between 15 and 17 years old because she is a non-betrothed virgin living in her family’s house. When she marries Isaac he is 40 but now he is 60 so we’ll place Rebekah around 35.
—She was barren but with divine help Isaac is given his heir to the promise. We find out though that there is struggling going on in the womb and the heir is actually twins.
—The 2 babies will turn out to be the leaders of two separate nations. The one who is stronger is Esau and the younger is Jacob.—The name Esau comes from the fact that he is born a red, hairy ape. Esau means “red” in Hebrew. Even though Jacob is a few minutes younger, Jacob means “heel grabber” or “deceiver” in Hebrew- names that will suit him well throughout his years.

The older shall serve the younger
—There’s an expression that says you shouldn’t grocery shop when you’re hungry, well obviously you shouldn’t negotiate birthrights while you’re hungry either. Esau the older is entitled to the birthright because he’s older but he comes home from hunting (but notice he doesn’t have any food to cook with him) and he’s hungry. Jacob on the other hand is cooking and Esau wants food.
—Is Esau really going to die after one day of hunting and then being hungry? Probably not but he is so ridiculous in convincing himself that he will that he deserves to lose his birthright.
—More than likely Rebekah has told Jacob in the past about what she was told (the older shall serve the younger) and Jacob decides to help himself by duping Esau out of his birthright.
—Notice that we are even told that Esau despised his birthright. It wasn't important enough for him to care about it
